How to Repair a Corrupted PDF File

Few things are as alarming as double-clicking an important PDF and getting an error instead of your document. Before you assume it's gone, it's worth knowing that 'corrupted' often means the file's structure is damaged, not that the content is destroyed — and damaged structure can sometimes be rebuilt.

What causes a PDF to corrupt

  • An interrupted download or transfer that left the file incomplete.
  • A storage error or a drive that was unplugged mid-write.
  • A crash in the app that was creating or exporting the PDF.
  • An email or sync process that altered the file in transit.

How repair works

A PDF has an internal index that tells readers where each page and object lives. When that index is damaged, the file won't open even though the page data is still there. A repair tool rebuilds the structure around the recoverable content, often producing a file that opens normally again. It can't invent data that was truly lost, but it salvages what remains.

Prevent it next time

Once you've recovered a file, save a backup copy and let downloads finish completely before opening them. If a PDF matters, keeping a second copy somewhere is cheap insurance. Repairing in the browser keeps the damaged file — which may still be sensitive — off any server.

Frequently asked questions

Can every corrupted PDF be repaired?+

No. Repair rebuilds the file structure around recoverable content, but data that was truly lost can't be restored. Many files with structural damage do open again.

Why won't my PDF open at all?+

Usually the internal index is damaged from an interrupted download or a crash. Rebuilding that structure often makes the file readable again.

Is repairing my file private?+

With an in-browser tool, yes — the file is processed locally and never uploaded.
